Frequently asked questions
nbn® Fibre is a broadband network technology that uses optical fibre to provide high-speed internet services directly to households and businesses. This is part of Australia’s National Broadband Network (nbn) rollout, which is delivering consistent, high-speed internet connectivity throughout the country.
The nbn® Fibre Upgrade involves upgrading your existing internet connection to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), which delivers a direct fibre optic line to your house or company. This upgrade improves internet speed, stability, and capacity.
The fibre upgrade involves upgrading to an nbn® 100Mbps plan or higher.
Eligibility depends on your current NBN technology type and location. Typically, premises with Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) are candidates for upgrades.
You can check your eligibility by entering your address here.
You may be wondering if the nbn fibre upgrade is free? As a new or existing Swoop customer, you can receive $0 installation on an nbn® Fibre upgrade package. Customers that qualify must live in eligible locations with standard installation. Only available with high-speed plans. Additional fees may apply when a new modem is necessary.
Standard installations are often free, but there may be charges for non-standard installations. T&Cs apply.
The physical upgrade typically takes a few hours, depending on the complexity of your premises’ existing infrastructure.
We aim to minimise downtime by keeping your existing connection active until the fibre upgrade is fully operational.
However, there might be a brief transition period on the day of the installation, typically lasting only a few minutes.
The installation involves setting up a fibre optic line to your premises. This process may require physical changes to your property, such as the installation of new equipment on the exterior and interior. The entire process typically takes a few hours to complete, depending on site conditions.
This video will show you how to prepare for installation day and make the most of your nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection.
In most cases, you’ll need to switch to a new plan to take advantage of the faster speeds available with Fibre. Eligible fibre upgrade plans now start from nbn® 100 Mbps, nbn® 500 Mbps, nbn® 750 Mbps and nbn® 1000 Mbps.
These plans are designed to match the enhanced capabilities of a fibre connection and ensure you get the best possible performance.

Upgrading to Fibre offers numerous benefits:
Faster speeds
A fibre connection provides access to theoretical speeds of up to 1Gbps, which is perfect for high-definition streaming, gaming, and huge downloads.
Improved connection
Direct fibre connections are less susceptible to interference and degradation than standard copper lines.
Increased capacity
A fibre connection offers enhanced capacity, allowing several devices to be connected at the same time without losing performance.
Yes, if you are renting, you will need permission from your landlord or property manager as the upgrade process may require modifications to the property. It’s important to get consent in writing before scheduling an installation.
Once upgraded to Fibre, it is not standard practice to revert to a previous technology like FTTN or FTTC, as FTTP provides a superior connection.
FTTP connections will only need a router as the nbn® connection box serves as a modem. Similar to modem routers, stand-alone routers are fairly easy to set up and just need to be plugged into your connection box and a power supply.
If your current router isn’t designed for higher speeds, you may want to upgrade to get the best performance. Swoop recommends the eero 7 mesh router, which supports Wi-Fi 7 and can easily handle speeds up to nbn® 1000.
It depends on your current router. FTTP connections require a router with a WAN or Internet port that can plug into the nbn® connection box. If your existing router isn’t built to handle higher speeds, you may need to upgrade to get the best performance.
Swoop recommends the eero 7 mesh router, which supports Wi-Fi 7 and can easily handle speeds up to nbn® 1000.
As part of the eligibility requirements for the nbn® upgrade, you must switch to a qualified plan with faster speeds.
Plans at higher levels are made to handle the faster speeds and more data that Fibre can offer. Lower-tier plans were not designed for the infrastructure’s features, and are not compatible with FTTP.

Businesses can benefit from higher upload speeds and more robust service guarantees with Business Fibre. We have included enhanced SLA’s on business nbn® plans 250 Mbps or higher.
Upgrade your business to Fibre Connect for $0
If you’re eligible, you can upgrade your nbn technology and move the nbn fibre optic closer to your premises for free.
If you’re moving, Swoop can help transfer your nbn® Fibre service to your new address (as long as it has FTTP). Let us know your move-in date early so we can schedule the connection and minimise downtime.

Yes. From 14 September 2025, nbn® rolled out nationwide speed upgrades for its fastest residential plans. If you’re eligible for the fibre upgrade (FTTP or HFC), your plan speeds may have increased automatically.
For example, nbn® 100 plans were uplifted to nbn® 500 speeds, and nbn® 250 plans were upgraded to nbn® 750.
This means you can now enjoy significantly faster speeds for the same price, making a fibre upgrade even better value.
